screaming as angry protesto storm a santa rosa city cou meeting demanding justic ld boy shot to death pushing, shoving, yelling, and screaming as angry protesters stormed a santa rosa city council meeting, demanding justice for a 13-year-old boy shot to death by a sheriff deputy. good evening i'm ken bastida. >> i'm elizabeth cook. what else protesters did that brought out sheriff deputies in riot gear. andrea? >> reporter: well the crowd broke some of the glass doors at the sonoma county jail today, but they were protesting because the deputy was back to work today, but on desk duty. >> reporter: it began at the santa rosa city council meeting. protesters upset about the man that shot and killed andy lopez

back in september put on a sonoma county uniform today. police hit city hall. >> they started pushing the crowd. as they started pushing these guys, i snuck around the side, but the cop stomped on my foot as i was getting past him. >> ending in one arrest. >> reporter: from there the protest went into the streets of santa rosa and ended up at the detention center. where the crowd insisted that they had the bail money to free the arrested protester ramon. and only to be told by cops and riot gears that the protest had turned into an unlawful gathering. they then moved to the sonoma county sheriff hq with the riot officers hot on their tails. >> reporter: the protest ended peacefully, but the message has not been forgotten that the protest was for andy and justice for hisfamily.

>> we can't have the police investigating the police and the sheriff investigating the sheriff. we need an outside professional investigation team to get to the root of the matter. >> reporter: and now after that order was given, the crowd came here to the sheriff headquarters in santa rosa. after about 20 minutes with the cops in riot gear standing around pretty much the entire perimeter of the parking lot where i'm standing, the crowd did, in fact, dispurse. live in santa rosa, kpix 5. a 15-year-old boy caught carrying this is under arrest. they saw the teenager pull the weapon out of his waistband while running on ninth street yesterday afternoon. police tracked him down and arrested him for possession of a firearm and on an outstanding warrant. statewide amber alert canceled tonight after chp said the missing teen had been found safe in mexico. the 14-year-old reported missing from washington on

december 4th. and authorities thought that she may have passed through the bay area. police are now looking for 19- year-old eduardo flores rosales last seen driving an early 2004 green ford escape with temporary washington registrations. call police if you have any information. and a miracle tonight out of nevada where a family of six found alive after spending two nights in below freezing temperatures in the snowy wilderness as they were rushed to the hospital, but only suffered minor injuries, thanks to several smart survival decisions. they spot the overturned car in trinity canyon about -- they spotted the overturned car in trinity canyon. for those of you in the newsroom with how they stayed alive in the sub zero temperatures. betty? >> reporter: ken, this family did some very smart and unusual things to stay alive. sticking to the and cruise the family's jeep as shell -- and

using the family's chief as shelter. >> reporter: tears broke out for four young children and two adults arriving in the hospital after the fridged nights in the wilderness. more than 200 people searched the remote mountain range by air and on foot for two days. ultimately it was a family friend who spotted the family's overturned jeep with binoculars. and when they came around the corner, i counted all six of them standing there. >> reporter: and the girlfriend, christina, took their two young children and niece and nephew to play in the snow. the car apparently swerved off the road and flipped over. the overnight temperatures dropped to 16 degrees below zero. their decision to stay together and with the jeep probably saved their lives. >> they had built some sort of a fire and were heating rocks to hold for the children to stay warm.

and that is very inventive. >> did a very good job of keeping them safe. they had some food and water the whole time also and that is just exposure. >> reporter: all six people found in good condition with no frostbite. the safe return was especially emotional for the sheriff. >> and it was the work of a lo of people in the community. and to have this community come together. and help this come to a successful conclusion. >> reporter: the doctor that treated this group said remarkably they only had exposure issues and they are all expected to make a full recovery. kpix 5. still no signs of the missing family from san jose whose plane disappeared over idaho last week. the friends, family members, search teams are still hopeful as they are continuing to look for them. the smith family disappeared in idaho while flying to montana after reporting engine

problems. taking a live look from oakland towards the bay bridge with a look at the moon. for once we can say that it will not be as good -- as cold as it has been, but there's a freeze warning in a few areas. we'll fill you in. >> yes, indeed with the clear skies around the bay area with some good news. the numbers tonight at this hour, they are from 3:00 to 8:00 degrees warmer than what they were last night at in time and we did need to bottom out over the past two days. tonight, freeze warnings are posted, but not nearly as bad as they could have it happen last night. they still show them down to 29 and same for fairfield and livermore above freezing and concordat 31. the overnight lows, 40 degrees, which should be the last night of the freeze warnings. you might have them there, but that'll be it. finally the cold snap will have that there. we'll have the details coming up in father -- in a few minutes. a street and a lawn on

fire. causing flames to shoot through pavement at the road. around 8:30 this morning, one witness said he knew something was wrong when he grabbed the hose to put out the fire on their lawn. >> it's something you don't see every day. and straight lines, kind of a tick tack toe kind of thing, but just a weird looking fire. and i knew something was not right. >> reporter: it burned for more than three hours. six homes evacuated. others were ordered to shelter in place. no word on the cause. crime in oakland soaring, the police force dwindling. that's a problem they face for a long time. and a new academy has started, but with fewer recruits than expected. >> reporter: tonight the city council in chambers now set to debate what will be one of the biggest problems. the fact they can't seem to keep some of the officers they

have or attract new ones. >> and the police department, please help us. help us. >> reporter: with so much crime going on in oakland as they don't always respond when you need them. >> reporter: more cops in a series of the police academy were suppose to bring. but so far cops don't want to work here. >> the city will continue to hire officers and put the academy on through to recruit people and as the veteran officers are leaving in large numbers. >> reporter: going to san francisco or other jurisdiction where there is less money ub -- less money and crime as they have enough to pay 675 officers, but only have 635 on the force. of those 45, they are still in training, not on the votes. to make matters worse, the recent academy designed to track up veteran cops have brought in four. >> reporter: a failure that has

been promised to be fixed with a resolution that would hold the city accountability. >> they would force them to have a backup plan in place to implement quickly whenever we fall the re-- the recruitment goal. >> the fact of creating more about the staffing shortage. >> reporter: at a time donlon says something more needs to change before they see oakland as a viable workplace. >> this is the most difficult place to be a police officer. certainly the state, if not the nation. >> reporter: and now one of the backup plans that they would recover, it would mean more recruits in the police academies. reporting live in oakland, kpix 5. in the meantime the interrum police chief was sworn in as the permanent chief this afternoon. the police department also

the memo you can call it the handshake that is seen around the world. president obama locking hands with the cuban leader raul castro at the memorial for nelson mandela. >> cbs4 reporter elliott rodriguez why the handshake has so many people shaken up. >> reporter: the president was making waves with the soccer stadium when the first person he greets is the cuban leader. then kisses him on both cheeks before moving on and greeting other dig nay -- dignitaries. the handshake with castro did not go down well with cubans. >> we are still upset with the reconciliation between the agreement and the pressing of the united states. >> reporter: the handshake was criticized by the florida senator marco rubio who said, "if the president was going to shake his hand, then he should have asked him about the basic freedoms that mandela was associated with that are denied

speaking of tomorrow, numbers in the upper 50s and the high pressure will be parked over the west coast, which is going to begin to warm us up just a little bit. cool air over the state, keeps us near, well, not really near the record lows, but plenty cold tonight and then the high pressure, they do not establish itself over the north coast. it doesn't move too much. as a result, no rain in sight. in fact some models are saying no more rain at least through christmas. we shall see. not as cold tonight. a warming trend will continue and high and dry as far as it looks. at least it's not minneapolis, where it is 2 degrees for tomorrow's high tomorrow. 17 in chicago. but miami, it's not bad, 82 degrees. for us tomorrow, we're going to look for, actually tonight, 29 in santa rosa, and 29 for fairfield. still plenty cold tonight. but tomorrow we'll gain a degree or two for the mid to upper 50s. so san francisco is 57. and same for livermore, doesn't look too bad at all. extended forecast, a couple of degrees today. that's all we ask. so by the weekend we'll be looking at numbers that will be in the lower 60s.

what some are calling a harmless kiss got 56-year-old colorado boy -- got a 6-year- old colorado boy suspended for sexual harassment. >> and i kissed someone's hand and that's what happened. >> the 6-year-old hunter was sent to the office, suspended for two days for his actions. now the boy's mom is fighting his school to have the incident removed from his record. >> how can you do this? how can you say this about my child? >> reporter: remove sexualharassment remove it from his record. i need to stand up and fight for him. >> reporter: both hunter and his mom admit that he has been in trouble before for kissing the same little girl in the past. the school district said that hunter's action fit the policy description of sexual harassment. >> it's a reading group. you've got to do something to cut the boredom. he's back, the retired
